7-day Morocco itinerary through the imperial cities
A week is enough for Morocco’s four imperial cities when the route runs in one direction from Casablanca to Marrakech. The plan below protects a full day for Fes and uses Volubilis as a natural stop between capitals.

Days 1–2: Casablanca and Rabat
Begin with the Hassan II Mosque and Atlantic corniche in Casablanca, then drive the short coast stage to Rabat. The capital is calmer than Marrakech and gives a gentle first evening around the Kasbah of the Udayas. On the second morning, visit Hassan Tower, the Mohammed V Mausoleum and the Andalusian gardens before continuing inland.
If the arrival flight lands late, skip Casablanca sightseeing and protect the following day. The city is a practical gateway, while Rabat carries more of the imperial-cities story.
Day 3: Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss
Use the road toward Fes to connect three contrasting stops. Meknes is known for its monumental gates and royal granaries; nearby Volubilis preserves Roman streets, mosaics and a triumphal arch; Moulay Idriss rises over the surrounding hills. The combination is much easier with a private vehicle than as separate excursions.
Sleep in Fes so the next morning begins inside the city rather than with another transfer.
Day 4: a full guided day in Fes
Give Fes el Bali a full day with a licensed local guide. The medina’s lanes connect madrasas, fondouks, workshops, food markets and viewpoints over the tanneries, but the value is in understanding how the neighbourhoods and crafts fit together. Build in time for lunch and one workshop visit instead of racing through a list of monuments.
A second night in Fes keeps the day relaxed and allows an early start for the southbound road.
Days 5–7: Middle Atlas to Marrakech
The transfer from Fes to Marrakech is long. Break it with the Middle Atlas or add an overnight if comfort matters more than covering all four capitals in seven days. In Marrakech, focus the first evening on Jemaa el-Fnaa, then use the final full day for the Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, souks and a garden visit.
This week-long route works best with an open-jaw flight: arrive through Casablanca and leave through Marrakech. Reversing it is equally valid.
What to add with two or three more days
With nine or ten days, add Chefchaouen before Fes or continue from Marrakech to Essaouira. The Sahara needs a larger extension because Merzouga introduces several long driving stages. If the desert is essential, make it the spine of a ten-day route rather than attaching it to an already full imperial circuit.
