Morocco desert tours, private and unhurried

A Morocco desert tour is less about a single night in the dunes than the route that gets you there. From Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas and passes Ait Benhaddou, the Dades or Todra gorges and a chain of oasis towns before reaching Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. A private vehicle lets those long stages become part of the journey instead of a transfer to endure.

Three days is the classic minimum from Marrakech. It gives you the mountain crossing, a gorge stop, a camel trek and one desert-camp night, but the final return is long. Four or five days creates room for the Draa Valley, the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs or an extra night around Merzouga. A longer Morocco itinerary can approach the Sahara from Fes and continue toward Marrakech without repeating the same road.

Camp styles range from simple bivouacs to private-tent camps with proper beds and en-suite facilities.
